Hi there! Welcome to the my journal where I share my most recent work, tips and adventures. Stay a while and do not forget to say hello!

Hi, I'm CARIKE

I specialize in:

Pleased to meet you, I am Carike!

May 10, 2019

To date, this has probably the hardest post to write. Yes, I know it is weird to write a blog post about myself and I have been in two minds about posting it for a very long time. In the end, I realized that as I am a new photographer in the Lakeland area, it is only right (and good manners) to introduce myself.

Photography and family life:

Photography hasn’t always been my first love, but I always admired a good photograph. I used to think: ‘How the heck does photographers get it right to make an ordinary photo look so good? Is it in the camera gear or the editing… or do they know something that hobbyists don’t?’ It was questions like those that inspired me to do a photography course. And I can tell you that now I even have more respect for photographers!

I qualified and worked as a dietitian in South Africa for six years. While nutrition and wellness will always be a great passion of mine, I decided to hold off on furthering my registration as a dietitian in Canada after I found out that I was pregnant (I am 34 weeks pregnant at the moment). Photography is a creative outlet for me and allows me to be my own boss and work flexi hours, which is perfect for me at the moment (I get employee of the month every month). I can’t wait to see where it will take me!

I met my husband on the first day of university and we had been together ever since. It is wonderful how we changed and grew as a couple over the years. Moving across the world has been the biggest blessing, but has not always been easy. Our trek has brought us closer and strengthened our relationship immensely. He has been my rock, best friend and biggest supporter for which I am so grateful!

Our first born is an eight-month-old labradoodle, Gemma. She is just the most beautiful little thing and keeps me on my toes. I think having her prepares us a little for a baby (maybe I will still count my words about this statement?!). Gemma is getting a human sister in June and we are so excited (and a little scared) to meet her!

A little more about me:

  • My name is Dutch and is pronounced ‘Careeka’
  • English is my second language. We speak Afrikaans at home which sounds like Dutch
  • I am an introverted extrovert with a soft nature
  • I am not super adventurous, but love traveling
  • I am one of six daughters
  • I often have blonde moments
  • Three things I cannot live without is chocolate, wine and coffee
  • I clear my head with a good run
  • I love dressing up, but on most days, you will find me in leggings and a sweater (even more so since I’ve been pregnant)
